2009 WinnersThe final of the 2009 competition was held in Cologne in June as part of the annual Bodycote management workshop. The prizes were presented by Stephen Harris, Chief Executive of Bodycote. The finalists competed for the 3 prizes of $5,000 each: best orally presented paper, best postgraduate scientific/technical paper, and best undergraduate scientific/technical paper. The runners-up each received $2,000.
All undergraduate finalists were offered a 1 year salaried internship at a Bodycote facility (location to be mutually agreed). Best postgraduate scientific/technical paper Michael Short Massachusetts Institute of Technology Diffusional stability of a ferritic-martensitic steel composite for service in advanced lead-bismuth cooled nuclear reactors. Best undergraduate scientific/technical paper William Herbert University of Oxford Micromechanical testing of stress-corrosion cracking in 304 stainless steel. Runner up Harpal Singh University of Manchester (undergraduate) Laser composite surfacing of steel.
