Bodycote’s onsite renewables : Solar renewable electricity generation at our Wuxi, China plant
  • Our heat treatment site in Wuxi, China, has utilised its roof and car park to maximise installation of on-site solar panels.
  • Outsourcing from a local solar panel manufacturer, a total of 900kWp solar panels have been installed, providing our heat treatment operations with 940,000kWh of renewable electricity per year.
  • The project, displacing grid electricity, will deliver carbon emission reductions of 556 tCO2e/year.
  • Renewables complemented with 60kW rapid EV chargers to support our visiting customers’ electric vehicles.
  • Vehicle charging also available to staff - supporting their transition to lower impact personal transport.

1. kWp refers to kilowatt peak which is the maximum electrical power output the solar installation can generate under optimum conditions.

2. MWh refers to megawatt hour which is the total electrical energy in a year expected to be generated in a year by this project. 1MWh=1,000kWh.

3. tCO2e refers to tonnes of CO2 equivalent, which is the greenhouse gas emissions avoided by the solar installation displacing use of grid electricity.

Adiabatic cooling upgrade for our Derby, UK plant

  • Our heat treatment site in Derby, UK, working extensively in the aerospace engine sector, with ten vacuum furnaces.
  • The plant’s existing furnace cooling system, utilised evaporative cooling towers.
  • A new, efficient, closed-loop adiabatic cooling system has been installed, leading to electricity consumption savings of 73%.
  • Further savings have been achieved through significant reductions in water consumption, maintenance and use of water treatment chemicals.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) drives ambitious climate action by enabling organisations to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. Bodycote is supporting its customers in bringing new innovation and more sustainable thermal processing that will enable the industry to meet its long term carbon reduction ambitions.
