John Hebeisen, who retired from Bodycote in 2006, has been named as the winner of the Metal Powder Industries Federation’s ‘Distinguished Service to Powder Metallurgy Award’ for 2009.
The purpose of this award is to recognise people who devote a major part of their working careers to one or more segments of the field of powder metallurgy and whose long-term contributions merit special recognition for outstanding service.
John Hebeisen has been a long-term leader and innovator in the HIP and Powder Metallurgy industry, beginning his career in 1969 at Crucible Research, where he worked as a member of the research team that first developed HIPed P/M high speed steel – a leading performance material to this day. In 1979 John co-invented the process to produce fully dense nickel-base superalloy articles from gas atomised, pre-alloyed powders. Over the years that followed, John worked on the expansion of HIP technology into P/M nickel base superalloys and titanium alloys for use in aerospace applications, as well as the development of HIP P/M near net shapes, HIP cladding, ceramic shell molding and other advanced PM applications.
John joined Bodycote Andover in 1981 as Marketing Manager, later serving as Plant Manager, VP of Marketing and Sales and, finally, as President of North American HIP Operations until his retirement in 2006. During his career he has published numerous publications and papers in this field, as well as two patents.
Dr Stephen Mashl, Director at Bodycote Andover, comments: “John has maintained the highest level of integrity throughout his career and has assisted many individuals with whom he has worked in the advancement of their own careers. He is respected and well regarded by all who have worked with him and fully deserving of the honor that goes with receipt of the MPIF Distinguished Service Award.”
John continues to play a leading role in the international HIP community and is currently Chair of the International HIP Committee and a member of the organising committee for ‘HIP 2011’, the industry’s international triennial HIP conference. John will be presented with his award at the Annual Powder Metallurgy Technical Conference in Las Vegas at the end of June.
